Somebody just accidentally sent $1 using a 3BTC fee!

A huge mistake has led some Bitcoin user to gift a 3BTC fee to their $1 transaction that was sent December 2020.

Reddit user seraf1990 has $350 stolen by Windows Clipboard malware

The user copied their deposit address from Coinbase, and after pasting and sending the coins from Binance, they discovered the malware had modified their clipboard's contents and replaced their deposit address with a look-alike address owned by the hacker:

Travel giant CWT just payed 414 BTC to have 2 TB of company data unencrypted, after it it was taken hostage by an encryption script deployed by hackers.

$65 Million stolen from NiceHash

Additionally, the amounts of bitcoin sent to each line of the letter include a string of numbers from pi, which 'goes on forever'.

When 25,000 BTC get stolen from one person (2011)

Here is the unfortunate story of bitcointalk user 'allinvain', who in 2011 woke up to find 25,000 BTC ($425K then, $120M now) stolen from his PC. Their wallet.dat file was apparently left un-encrypted and vulnerable on a live Linux computer, which a virus or attacker was able to access.

The attacker, however, was kind enough to leave 1720 BTC untouched, which it appears allinvain was able to safely sweep them the next day.

Petya Ransomware collected 4.1 BTC ($17K)

The Petya ransomware was first seen in 2016, but this new strain in 2017 is one of several ransomwares using NSA's leaked Eternalblue exploit.

This version presented the same Bitcoin address to every victim, which was clearly useless because the ransomware was modified to be unable to un-encypt the files it held hostage. It attacked over 80 companies, mostly in Ukraine and western Europe, most notably Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear power plant's radiation monitoring system was disabled.

The largest transaction fee ever

291.241 BTC was accidentally attached to this transaction in mid 2016, equivalent to $136K then, or $1.2M today.

The mining pool that claimed it, BitClub, offered to refund it if an entity could prove control of the sending address, but after some drama related with mixing services, half of the fee was instead donated to The Bitcoin Foundation.

A few of the largest accidental fees attached to transactions: 81 BTC, 50 BTC, 30 BTC, 16.95 BTC, 10.7 BTC, 4.6 BTC.

The 50BTC fee mined January 2017 is still an ongoing story... The fee was mined by 1Hash.com, and the creator of the transaction has been desperately trying to contact the mining pool to possibly receive a portion of it back. They have signed a message using the spending address, but there has been no word from 1Hash yet.
